Systematic literature searching for medicine and health

If you are going to map the literature on a topic, write a grant application or a systematic review, you will need a systematic literature search.

  • Constructing a systematic search strategy
  • Search methods and adapting search strategies to different databases
  • Documenting search strategies so that they can be reproduced

Recommended prerequisite skills and knowledge

Course methods

  • Presentations, demonstrations, and practical exercises.
  • The databases demonstrated will be MEDLINE, Embase, or APA PsycInfo from Ovid (may depend on the participants’ submitted research questions).
  • To get the most out of the course we recommend that you submit your research question beforehand (see below).
  • There are computers available, but you are also welcome to bring your own.

Your own topic

At the course each participant will work on their own topic. Convert your topic into an answerable and searchable question, preferably by using PICO or another framework. Please submit your question using this online form  by 21 November at 08:00 AM so that we can look at it before the course.

Target audience

This course is aimed at topics and methods used in medicine and health. It is particularly relevant for students and employees at Oslo University Hospital, the Faculty of Medicine, the Faculty of Dentistry, in addition to the Department of Pharmacy and the Department of Psychology. Researchers and students working on health related topics at other faculties and departments, e.g. educational sciences and informatics, may also benefit from the course.  

Number of places

Maximum 12. A minimum of 5 registered participants is required to run the course.
