R programming: a crash course for beginners

Learn the BASIC of programming in R, a common tool for data analysis and statistics. The goal of this workshop is to provide a starting point for those newly interested in R.

Learning outcomes

After attending the mini-workshop, you will know how:

  • R works 
  • to use the RStudio interface
  • to use basic commands, syntax and structure of R programming
  • to upload data in RStudio from CSV, Excel or txt file 
  • to assign values to variables
  • to select individual values and subsections from data

  • to create simple visualization

No advanced R programming will be teach in this mini-workshop.

Setup and preparations

Participants need to have their own laptop with both R and RStudio installed. It is recommended that you bring a power cord for your own device.

Both R and RStudio are free. R can be downloaded from https://cran.r-project.org and RStudio from https://www.rstudio.com/products/rstudio/download/.

For UiO laptops, R and RStudio can be installed via Software Center.

If you need help installing R and/or RStudio, contact local IT in your department. If you cannot install R and RStudio on your own computer, you can use UiO Programkiosk or Posit Cloud (formerly RStudio Cloud).

This workshop is designed for Early Career Researchers at the Faculty of Social Sciences and the Faculty of Education who identify themselves as ABSOLUTE beginners in the subject matter.
