Create and Handle Data Management Plans with the Data Stewardship Wizard

This workshop will provide an overview of the Data Stewardship Wizard (DSW), a tool for creating and handling data management plans (DMPs).

The tool consists of a dynamic forms system operated within a web browser and offers a number of templates based on national and international requirements, including Science Europe and Horizon Europe. On top of these, DSW also offers a template based on the machine-actionable DMP standard developed by the Research Data Alliance, which recently entered the guidelines from The Research Council of Norway. DSW is emerging at a national and European level as the go-to solution for creating and handling DMPs, also outside of the life sciences community where it is developed (ELIXIR). This workshop is run with the intent of building capacity in light of its possible adoption. The primary instructor will introduce DSW and its features to the audience. The instructor will show how to create a DMP, starting either from scratch or from a set of recommendations and how to export DMPs to a document compliant with funding bodies' requirements or to a machine actionable standard. A general overview of how DSW handles different DMP models including version control will follow, together with a demonstration of how generic questionnaires can be adapted to a specific domain or use case. A practical session will follow: the participants will use a dedicated instance of DSW for creating or customising a DMP questionnaire. The two instructors will give advice and bring up interesting discussion points based on feedback from the participants.

Learning outcomes

  • Understand how an organization can adopt DSW to its users respectively from its domain
  • Understanding of how ELIXIR Norway operates its DSW instance
  • Start a new DMP on DSW, from scratch or from a set of pre-filled recommendations
  • Share and work collaboratively on the DMP
  • Export a DMP according to funders' templates, including the Science Europe template (adopted by the Research Council of Norway) and Horizon Europe
  • Create customised questionnaires and adapt existing ones, and make these questionnaires public

Prerequisites

A general understanding of DMPs and common practices in data management.

Target audience

We particularly welcome data managers and related categories. Researchers with particular responsibility over the data generated in a project are also welcome.
