The Far Eastern Library is a reference and research library for archaeology, art, cultural history and the history of Asia with emphasis on the museum’s main collection areas, in particular East Asia. The library book stock includes important reference works on East Asian languages such as Chinese and is one of the leading libraries in northern Europe in terms of Sinology from a historical perspective. In Sweden, the Far Eastern Library is the foremost principal library on Chinese art history and archaeology. Its total book stock comprises around 100,000 titles.
The library is situated at the Museum of Far Eastern Antiquities (Östasiatiska Museet) which is one of four museums in the National Museums of World Culture. The Museum of Far Eastern Antiquities was established in 1926, with the Swedish archaeologist Johan Gunnar Andersson (1874–1960) as founding director and Bernhard Karlgren as second director. The collections were originally based mainly on Andersson’s groundbreaking discoveries in China during the 1920s of a hitherto unknown East Asian prehistory. The museum today has world-class collections from Japan, Korea, India and China. It exhibits of both archeology, classical arts and contemporary culture.
