Rules of cunduct at UiO

Unacceptable behavior

Conduct that is not in accordance with normal manners and Norwegian law, or conduct that is disturbing or intimidating towards employees or other guests, is not acceptable. Such behavior includes:

  • Harassing or threatening behavior
  • Violence
  • Offensive or insulting language and gesticulation
  • Unnecessary noise
  • Specifically, it is not allowed to: 
    • use drugs
    • lie down and sleep in the library
    • wash clothes, shave, cut hair or "shower" in the toilet rooms
    • leave behind private property in the library
    • leave behind trash in the library
    • collect or beg for money, campaigns/promotions or any types of lobbying, outreach activities, including placing advertising, flyers etc. in the library
    • sell goods or services
    • use a bike, skateboard, scooter, roller skates or similar
  • It is not permitted to photograph or film other persons in the library without their individual consent. Details on how to photograph or film on campus (in Norwegian). 

Be also aware of the following

  • The University Library is not responsible for personal belongings that are stolen, lost, or broken in the libraries.
  • Furniture or similar must not block escape routes or emergency exits.
  • One must leave the library when it closes.

If the rules of conduct are broken

If guests do not comply with the rules and regulations, the staff will first issue a friendly reminder. Security might be summoned. 

  • Any violation of the regulations may lead to a temporary ban. 
  • Police might be called in to carry out the expulsion.
  • Any infringement of the law may lead to a police report.
  • Serious or repeated violations of the rules of conduct will be reported to the Security Operation Center at UiO, the student administration and the University Library Executive Group.
