Summary

This week, we had meetings about technology to make interactive (touch) applications, about mapping technical infrastructure and touch table use. Furthermore, we presented and had meetings at the Humanities and Social Sciences Library at UiO, leading to ample inspiration and ideas. Finally, a workshop paper was submitted for an international conference on Human Information Interaction & Retrieval, taking place in Oslo in March.

Specific activities, including

Meeting Winoe Bhikharie, co-founder XIMPEL (Amsterdam, 07.02.17)

  • Talk about using open-source XIMPEL platform (HTML5) for potentially creating “Hidden Figures” touch table application. XIMPEL allows for creating applications linking together videos, images and text, and even (simple) games, using simple XML playlists. The value of utilizing a platform like XIMPEL is that we can develop the application rapidly, and potentially reuse components for future exhibitions.

  • Winoe (NL) agreed in helping to extend the XIMPEL platform for our purposes

  • Some specific technical customization by Hugo and Dan Michael, integrating a module for “browsing” related books

    • Creation / design of application, using promotional materials from Fox (videos, images), related material provided by Science Library staff

List of tasks

  • Create interactive video (playlist + content) (Hugo, DM)

  • Building in support for loading external URLs (Winoe)

  • “Kiosk-mode”: autostart, hide controls. “Home” button to restart application and put it in the initial state. Timer restarting the app after 10 (t.b.d.) minutes inactivity

  • If time allows: build-in logging possibilities, performing user testing

  • Submitting a paper for Supporting Complex Work Tasks workshop at CHIIR conference, Oslo, March 2017 (Hugo, 06.02.17)

    • “Towards a Helpful Framework: Search User Interface Features and Their Role in the Complex Information Seeking Process”. Will be extended later to book context (i.e. which assistive features are useful when searching for books?)

  • Preparing Library Carpentry workshop proposal as satellite of VIRAK

    • Focused on data processing and visualization

  • Submitting a digital clip proposal for VIRAK, written by INF2260 students on their touch table project, entitled “Touch table som verktøy for å utforske science fiction-samlingen”
