Week 12

Keywords: Amazon/LibraryThing dataset, Analysis of Vocabularies

Bilde: Hugo Huurdeman

Summary

This week, in the Visual Navigation project, we looked at the possibilities to use an extensive Amazon/LibraryThing dataset for visualization purposes, received it and started creating the (server) environment to use it. Also, we worked on an analysis of the subject vocabularies, and how they could be (visually) exploited for navigation purposes. This led to some initial search and exploration interface mockups, which will be further continued next week. Finally, Hugo presented at a conference about information seeking and retrieval, also learning about current and past visualization approaches in the context of search systems during other presentations.

Specific activities

  • Receiving the Amazon / LibraryThing book search dataset (Dan Michael)
  • Requesting a new server at UiO, creating a MongoDB database
  • Creating designs for “visual” book search application (Hugo)
  • Which facets and relations can we derive from the subject vocabularies?
  • In which ways we can show these aspects visually?
  • Organizing and conducting a brainstorm session about touch table use, with students (Yaron, Hugo)

Meetings, including

Discussing current, past and future work, as well as the CHIIR conference, organized by HiOA, March 2107 (Hugo, Ragnar Nordlie, Nils Pharo)

Brainstorm session (organized by Yaron & Hugo, conducted by Yaron), focused on touch table

Four participants:

1 student (1st year)

1 newly employed library employee (Realf)

1 long-time employee (Realf)

1 HCI designer

About 20 different ideas came up, including “distraction” (e.g. games), campus maps (e.g. what to do where, events, info.movies), competitions, group work (mind maps), creative lab etc. Another interesting issue: “What does the table do when it is not used?”, Where to physically place the table, would be nice if it e.g. can be viewed from above

Another brainstorm next week (24.11.16; INF students). End presentations students INF2260 course
