About EndNote Online

EndNote Online is an addition to EndNote that makes it easier to back up your references, work with the same library from multiple locations and collaborate with others.

It is possible to use EndNote Online as a limited free version of EndNote, to collect references and add citations in Word. Students and staff at UiO and OUS have access to the full version of EndNote Desktop but can use EndNote Online as well.

Safety and backup

EndNote Online is a good way to make sure you do not lose your references if something happens to your local EndNote library. Once you sync your references, they become available to you in EndNote Online.

If you have lost your EndNote library, a new one can be created and synchronized with your EndNote Online account.

EndNote Online and Word

The CWYW (Cite While You Write) feature of EndNote Online is very similar to the Desktop version, but does not have as many options.

If you do not have EndNote Desktop installed on your computer, download a CWYW plug-in from EndNote Online.

To use it in Word:

  1. EndNote tab
  2. Preferences
  3. Application > EndNote online
  4. Sign in to your EndNote Online account

See how to create citations and bibliographies in Word.

Sharing and collaboration

It is possible to collaborate in Word and merge several documents together. This requires the use of references from the same library. You can share an EndNote library with up to 100 others. Anyone can then add and remove references.

In order to share libraries with others and open others' libraries, you must have an EndNote Online account.

Share your library with others

From EndNote Desktop:

  1. Use the Share Library button (se EndNote Interface)
    EndNote 20: File > Share
  2. Enter the email address of the person you want to share with

Open a library someone has shared with you

From EndNote Desktop:

  1. File > Open Shared Library...
  2. Highlight the library you want to open (the email address of the library owner)
  3. Open

Collaboration in Word

  • Use Word with EndNote as usual, but use references from the shared EndNote Library.
  • Several authors can write their own part and these parts are merged in the end.
  • One person must be responsible for merging all the documents into one main document in the end.
  • Bibliographies must not be copied into this main document, only text.
